GAVA, Spain -- Cheered by fans and with a smile on his face, Lionel Messi didnt look like a man facing a multimillion-euro fine and possible jail time when he arrived to face a judges questions in a tax fraud court case on Friday. Jeremy Lane Jersey . The Barcelona star gave answers for around half an hour after his father Jorge Horacio Messi was also questioned. After they were whisked away in separate cars, Messis lawyer briefly spoke outside the courthouse No. 3 in Gava, an easygoing coastal town just south of Barcelona near Messis residence. "The Messi family has wanted that we act with transparency, clarity and with a sense of co-operation, and that is how things went today as well," said Cristobal Martell, Messis lawyer. "It was evident that there was little intent of committing fraud and a great willingness to normalize the situation with the tax office and to not get involved in a fierce battle with the state in an attempt to interpret the current tax regulations." A complaint lodged by a Spanish state prosecutor in June said Messi and his father tried to conceal earnings from the players image rights. The complaint alleged the Argentina international owed 4 million euros ($5.3 million) in back taxes from 2007, 2008 and 2009. Messis father made a payment of more than 5 million euros ($6.6 million) on Aug. 14 to cover alleged back taxes and interest. That payment led the court to decide that neither Messi nor his father needed to post bail. Fridays hearing was to see if there are clear indications of illegality. If so, then the judge could recommend that the case be prosecuted, barring an out-of-court settlement. If the case goes to trial and Messi and his father are found guilty, they could face a fine reaching 150 per cent of the amount of back taxes and a possible prison sentence. In the complaint, state prosecutor Raquel Amado alleges that from 2006-09 Messi "obtained significant revenue derived from the transfer to third parties of his image rights, income which should have been taxed." The complaint says Messi "circumvented his tax obligations" by using shell companies in tax havens such as Belize and Uruguay. Messi and his father have always denied any wrongdoing. They have received the backing of Barcelona president Sandro Rosell and former president Joan Laporta, who was head of the club during the years covered in the complaint. Messi, wearing a suit but no tie, arrived looking relaxed at the courthouse an hour after his father. Messi was hailed by a group of fans and curious passers-by that grew to around 50 people, including many children, alongside about 100 journalists and photographers. Upon leaving the courthouse, several fans chanted "Messi! Messi!" and a few teenagers chased his car as it sped away down a sunny street. The case has apparently not distracted Messi at work. Messi is joint-leading scorer of the Spanish league with seven goals. Barcelona plays at Almeria on Saturday looking to maintain its lead of the league. The 26-year-old Messi is widely considered the best player of his generation after winning several titles with Barcelona and the highest individual award, the world player of the year, a record four years in a row. Messi is rated by Forbes as the worlds 10th highest-paid athlete. He reportedly earned $41.3 million to June this year, $20.3 million coming from his club salary and $21 million in endorsements. The soft-spoken Messi had steered clear of scandal in his highly successful career. Spain has been trying to crack down on tax evasion as it fights to repair the countrys public finances amid a double-dip recession. Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro warned football players in April they should make sure they are "comfortable" with their tax affairs. Last year former Barcelona player Luis Figo paid 2.45 million euros in taxes pertaining to image rights from 1997-99. They were right in that they responded to coach Randy Carlyles goaltending switch to erase a two-goal deficit.ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Ben Brust and his Wisconsin teammates got oodles of open shots while they sliced and diced Baylors vaunted zone defence. When the Bears had the ball, 7-foot Frank Kaminsky always seemed to be right in their way. Brust, Kaminsky and their Badgers realize they dominated Baylor in a 69-52 victory Thursday night because of a coach who always puts them in the right spots. Bo Ryan has never been to college basketballs final weekend, but the Badgers are thrilled to put him on the brink. "That would be a very special thing to do, but we also know that hes not going to let us look too far ahead," said Brust, who scored 14 points. "When that time comes, well handle it. Id definitely like to do that for him." Kaminsky scored 19 points and blocked six shots while Wisconsin romped into the West Regional final, reaching the final eight for the third time in school history. Brust hit three of the six 3-pointers from the second-seeded Badgers (29-7), who jumped to a 14-point lead in the first half and never let up on the overmatched Bears (26-12). Kaminsky and his disciplined teammates shredded the Baylor zone that played so well in the first two games. Wisconsin also methodically shut down Baylors talented offence while moving into its second regional final in 13 years under Ryan, who has seen just about everything except the Final Four in a 700-win coaching career. "Id be honoured to be a part of that," Kaminsky said. Wisconsin advanced to the regional final Saturday against top-seeded Arizona, which held off San Diego State 70-64 in the late game at Honda Center. The Badgers havent been to the Final Four since retired coach Dick Bennett got them there in 2000. The Badgers advanced by countering everything the Bears do well. Wisconsin wrecked Baylors zone, negated their 3-point shooting acumen with perimeter defence, kept the tempo at the Badgers preferred speed and even held a 39-33 rebounding edge on Baylor, one of the nations top rebounding teams. Ryan put on a bit of a coaching clinic, but thats nothing new. The Wisconsin folk hero has led the Badgers to an NCAA tournament berths in each of his 13 seasons, but only got this close to the Final Four in 2005. "We get 40 more minutes, and Im awfully proud of them,," Ryan said. Custom Houston Texans Jerseys. Kaminsky added another remarkable performance to his junior season with the Badgers, racking up 10 points and four blocked shots while Wisconsin took a 29-16 lead into halftime. Wisconsin held Baylor to a season-low in first-half points. Cory Jefferson scored 15 points for the sixth-seeded Bears in their third Sweet 16 trip in five years. Isaiah Austin and Montreals Kenny Chery scored 12 points apiece for Baylor. The Bears needed a late rally just to match their lowest-scoring performance of the season in the final seconds. "Wisconsin really played a great game, and we did a very poor job in making things tough," said Baylor coach Scott Drew, who still led his team to a strong finish after its 2-8 start to Big 12 play. "Theyre extremely hard to pressure and rattle. ... Once we got behind, we had to do some things we wished we didnt have to do." Three lower-bowl sections of the Anaheim Ducks home arena were packed with red-clad Badgers fans, who usually turn out in droves for their schools trips to Southern California, including three straight recent trips to the Rose Bowl. They had plenty of time to celebrate while their Badgers quickly sapped all of the drama out of these schools first meeting. Baylors flexible zone defence caused numerous problems for Nebraska and Creighton in the Bears victories last week. With a few days to prepare, Ryan clearly figured out exactly how to attack it. The Badgers got multiple open looks on nearly every possession in the first half, moving the ball around the perimeter for open 3-point attempts or getting it down low to Kaminsky, who scored eight of Wisconsins first 10 points. Brust hit two 3-pointers in the first half, and only a few open misses prevented Wisconsin from blowing it open early. On the other end, the Bears had little of the poise they showed in their first two games. Baylor missed 12 of its first 15 shots and fell behind by 14 late in the half. Baylor finally abandoned the zone early in the second half, but Traevon Jackson hit a 3-pointer for Wisconsin on the next possession. The Bears showed their athleticism and skill with several one-man drives to the hoop in the second half, but the Badgers calmly stuck to their plan in a blowout win.
