BOSTON - As a Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster, Nomar Garciaparra watched Clayton Kershaw become the dominant pitcher in the National League, winning three of the last four NL Cy Young Awards — the last one unanimously. Nick Schmaltz Jersey .But when fans ask if hes ever witnessed anyone as good as the L.A. left-hander, Garciaparra stops them cold.Hang on, he says, I got to play with Pedro Martinez. The former Red Sox shortstop was already in Boston when the reigning NL Cy Young winner arrived from the Montreal Expos in 1997. And he saw the Dominican right-hander win the AL award twice with the Red Sox, in back-to-back seasons in 1999-2000 that established him as one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball history. In that two-year period — in the middle of a golden age of hitting — Martinez went 41-10 with a 1.90 ERA and 597 strikeouts. After that, all he did was anchor the staff that helped the Red Sox earn their cathartic World Series victory in 2004, ending an eight-decade drought.Martinez went on to pitch four seasons with the New York Mets, three of them injury-plagued, and returned to the World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009 before retiring. Five years later, he is eligible for the baseball Hall of Fame and likely to be among the inductees announced Tuesday.Like Randy Johnson, who is also making his first appearance on the ballot, Martinez is a virtual certainty to be enshrined in July; each has a chance to break Tom Seavers record of 98.84 per cent of the ballots cast. Also like Johnson, Martinez was an imposing presence on the mound. But while the 6-foot-10 left-hander could intimidate with his size, Martinez accomplished as much with control that allowed him to use all parts of the plate — including the inside. When he came out of the bullpen in relief for the finale of a 1999 AL Division Series game against Cleveland, the Indians batters were visibly deflated. Martinez, who had left Game 1 with a back strain, pitched six innings of no-hit relief to finish off the series.I wanted to make my presence be felt, Martinez said this summer when he returned to Boston for induction into the franchise Hall of Fame. Every time I went out there, I wanted to make sure that you knew, that you were aware, that I wasnt kidding out there. That this was my job. That Im here and Im going to be responsible for it.In all, Martinez finished with a 219-100 record and a 2.93 ERA. He struck out 3,154 batters and walked 760 in 2,827 innings. He twice won 20 games, twice struck out more than 300 batters and twice posted an ERA below 2.00. He was an eight-time all-star, and five times he led the major leagues in ERA.In 1999, he went 23-4 with 313 strikeouts and a 2.07 ERA. He started the All-Star Game at Fenway park and struck out five of the six batters he faced, including fellow Hall of Fame candidates Larry Walker, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and Jeff Bagwell, as well as Barry Larkin, who was inducted in 2012.On Sept. 10 of that season, he fanned 17 New York Yankees — no ones ever done that before or since — during a one-hitter in which he faced one batter over the minimum. (Martinez does not have an official no-hitter, though he did pitch nine perfect innings for Montreal in 1995 before giving up a double to lead off the 10th.)After dispatching the Indians in the first round of the 99 playoffs, Martinez pitched seven shutout innings in Game 3 of the ALCS to beat Roger Clemens and the rival Yankees. After the season, he was a unanimous choice as the leagues top pitcher and missed adding the AL MVP because two voters left him off their ballots entirely. He won his third Cy Young award the next year, going 18-6 with a 1.74 ERA that was half of the next-best mark in the AL, Clemens 3.70. Martinez allowed 0.74 walks and hits per inning pitched — the fewest for a full season in baseball history. But his pitching was perhaps secondary to the electricity he brought to Fenway, adding a multicultural flavour to a ballpark that had been famously colorless — the Red Sox were the last major-league team to integrate — in a city resistant to all forms of change. On days he pitched, Dominican flags fluttered in the stands and fans chanted his name while banging drums to a Latin beat. The Boston Globe began running its baseball stories in Spanish alongside the English ones.Martinez himself wasnt above partaking in the festivities — when he wasnt pitching. His antics during one game were so distracting that Garciaparra tied him to a dugout pole with athletic tape — saving the last piece to cover Martinezs mouth.I wanted to be loose on the days I dont pitch. In the same way, I wanted to keep my teammate loose, said Martinez, who is now a special assistant to Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. The season is really long. If you dont have fun, especially on the days youre not performing, its going to be a long season out there. Jan Rutta Jersey .J. -- Travis Zajac of the New Jersey Devils took a lot of grief considering his scored the first of his career-best three goals just 12 seconds into a crucial game against the Florida Panthers. Ilonen birdied five of his closing seven holes in superb scoring conditions to end the day with a two-shot lead on the Fota Island course. Ilonen had just 26 putts on the occasion of his 300th European Tour event. PITTSBURGH -- Jeff Locke spent a lot of time with A.J. Burnett last year, and then faced his mentor in a pitching matchup in Pittsburgh. Locke got the best of Burnett on Sunday in Pittsburghs 6-2 victory that finished off a three-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies. "It didnt even feel like we were playing a Major League Baseball game," Locke said. "We spoke really briefly before we got in the bullpen, just told each other to have fun today, go get em. Pound down." Locke gave up just three hits and a walk in eight innings, and the Pirates completed their first sweep of the season. Pittsburgh had failed to finish a sweep in eight previous tries this season. Philadelphia was swept for the eighth time. "I didnt know we didnt have a sweep all season," Locke said. "It feels good, especially a team like those guys over there. Especially when (Marlon) Byrd and A.J. come back again." The Pirates (47-41) moved a season-high six games over .500, while the Phillies (37-51) fell a season-high 14 games below .500. Locke (2-1) gave up two runs -- one earned -- and struck out four. He has made six straight quality starts since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on June 8. The left-hander worked mostly off of his fastball and changeup in an outing his manager Clint Hurdle called "fantastic." Byrd gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a single to left. Jimmy Rollins scored an unearned run from second after he reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Pedro Alvarez. Alvarez leads the major leagues with 18 errors this season. Pittsburgh responded in its half of the inning with two runs to erase Philadelphias early lead. Andrew McCutchen beat out a ground ball to shortstop with two outs after Burnett struck out the Pirates first two hitters. Neil Walker followed with a single. Against his former batterymate, Pirates catcher Russell Martin hit a two-run double to right-centre for a 2-1 advantage that wouldnt have been possible without McCutchens hustle. "Thats my game," McCutchen said. "I go up, hit a ball on the ground, and I have an opportunity to do something with it. Thats what I use my legs for and thats what Im going to always be like." The Pirates added another run in the third when Josh Harrison led off with a triple that spllit the gap in right-centre. Custom Chicago Blackhawks Jerseys. Harrison tagged from third on a shallow fly ball from Walker to centre fielder Ben Revere and scored as Reveres throw came in offline. Burnett (5-8) gave up three runs and five hits, walked two and struck out seven in seven innings in his return to Pittsburgh. The Pirates played a "Thank You A.J." video on the scoreboard when Burnett took the mound in the first inning "The video caught me by surprise," Burnett said. "I dont know what to say about it. It was very moving. It was very unexpected." Byrd hit his 18th home run in the seventh inning to draw Philadelphia within 3-2. Locke threw Byrd a changeup low and inside, which Byrd sent over the fence in left field. "He got me," Locke said. "I got ahead of him, threw a changeup, and boom, he hit it. I knew it was a home run." For Hurdle, it was only a matter of time until Byrd would damage the Pirates. "Byrds a good hitter," Hurdle said. "We played with the tigers tail earlier in the series because he had a lot of at-bats with runners in scoring position that we were able to navigate through and around." Byrd finished 2 for 4 with two RBI. "Hes been very steady for us," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "An everyday grinder who forces the chips in. Hes been one of our consistent bats." Harrison scored again in the eighth on a RBI triple by McCutchen, who was awarded third base because of fan interference following a crew chief review initiated by home plate umpire Dale Scott. Philadelphia reliever Justin De Fratus elevated an 81 mph slider over the plate that McCutchen hammered to the opposite field. "I thought it had a chance," McCutchen said. "But like Ive said plenty of times, you just never know what the ballpark is. Some days itll go, some days it wont." McCutchen then scored on a single by Starling Marte, and Jordy Mercer drove in another run with a sacrifice fly. NOTES: Pittsburgh RHP Charlie Morton (5-9, 3.30 ERA) will oppose St. Louis RHP Adam Wainwright (1-4, 1.89 ERA) on Monday when the teams begin a three-game series at Busch Stadium. ...
