Pass me an oxygen tank -- and a pillow. Jake Elliott Jersey .After the greatest opening weekend in college football history, I need a vacation from my vacation. Labor Day turned out to be pretty laborious for The Eliminator.Following four days of incredible upsets, thrilling finishes, memorable debuts and more than a handful of epic comebacks, I need a week to catch my breath and get some rest. On paper, Week 2 doesnt figure to be as unpredictable. But isnt that what we always say about the weekends that end up being the craziest? The opening weekend wasnt nearly as enjoyable for a handful of teams from the Power 5 conferences. Washington State, Iowa State and Virginia all fell to FCS foes.?It also wasnt a strong opening weekend for the SEC - considered by many to be the sports best conference. SEC teams lost to opponents from Conference USA and the Sun Belt, and SEC East favorite Tennessee needed overtime to beat Appalachian State. Overall, SEC teams went 7-7 in their openers.SEC members Kentucky and Mississippi State were among the 29 teams eliminated from consideration for the College Football Playoff by The Eliminator, which is narrowing the 128-team FBS field to the four spots for the playoff.Heres where the FBS stands after Week 1:Jump to Sections: Whos In | Still In Contention | On The Fence | Better Luck Next SeasonWhos inIf the opening weekend is any indication, its going to be a wild race for the College Football Playoff. Seven ranked teams lost in the first week -- the most to fall in their openers in AP Top 25 history. Defending national champion Alabama was among the few teams that actually looked dominant in its opener. The Crimson Tide blasted USC 52-6 in Arlington, Texas, which was the Trojans worst opening loss in program history. As a result, the Crimson Tide get the No. 1 seed. Florida State earned the No. 2 seed after rallying from a 22-point deficit to beat Ole Miss 45-34 in Orlando, Florida, on Monday night. It was the largest comeback in FSU history. Ohio State is the No. 3 seed after blasting Bowling Green 77-10. I could have easily gone with Michigan, which routed Hawaii 63-3 in its opener, but Ill give the edge to the Buckeyes because of quarterback J.T. Barrett. Finally, Houston is the No. 4 seed after upsetting Oklahoma 33-23 on Saturday. The Cougars looked as good as anybody in the opening week.Still in contentionAlabama Crimson Tide Trending: UPThe Lane Kiffin Revenge Tour continued with a 52-6 trouncing of USC. BOSTON -- Clay Buchholz ruined the suspense.Although Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said Tuesday he isnt ready to reveal his starting pitchers for Game 3 or Game 4 of the best-of-five American League Division Series against the Cleveland Indians, Buchholz spilled the beans, telling reporters before a workout at Fenway Park that he has been informed he will start Game 3 on Sunday in Boston.Im glad this year happened the way it did, said Buchholz, who was exiled to the bullpen in midseason and mentioned in trade rumors before rejoining the rotation in August and going 4-0 with a 2.98 ERA in eight starts down the stretch. Theres been a lot of ifs and buts but still found a way to stick around. I think this postseason will be fun.On Sunday, Farrell confirmed that right-hander Rick Porcello will start Game 1 on Thursday night in Cleveland followed by ace lefty David Price in Game 2 on Friday. Buchholz and lefty Eduardo Rodriguez were expected to round out the Red Soxs postseason rotation, with lefty Drew Pomeranz likely occupying a spot in the bullpen.Asked about the decision to have Buchholz pitch Game 3, Farrell said the Red Sox havent announced that officially but acknowledged internal discussions about that scenario.Buchholz makes sense in Game 3 because the Red Sox likely would have him available out of the bullpen for a potential Game 5 next Wednesday in Cleveland. Buchholz made 16 relief appearances this season after being removed from the starting rotation. Rodriguez has never pitched out of the bullpen. The Red Sox put Buchholz back in the rotation in August in place of injured knuckleballer Steven Wright, and the veteran right-handers resurgence ranks among the biggest reasons the club was able to pull away from the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles and win thee AL East. Chuck Bednarik Jersey. We always felt he was a good pitcher, Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said. He didnt get a real good start to his year, but Ive seen guys have tough times but you still know they have ability. For me, we always thought at some point the depth you have on the pitching staff was going to be important. He had the big league ability to do it. Fortunately we kept him, and hes pitched well for us.Said Buchholz: Baseball is a confidence-driven game. If youre confident, youre a lot better than being not confident. I got some confidence moving in the right direction. In July, assistant pitching coach Brian Bannister discovered that Buchholzs release point had dropped considerably over the past few seasons. Together with pitching coach Carl Willis, they worked to correct the mistake.Another factor in Buchholzs turnaround: He began pitching exclusively from the stretch, even with no runners on base.Moving to the stretch, it simplified just about everything I do within the delivery, and I didnt have to think of anything, Buchholz said. Ive got a lot more comfortable doing that. Thats probably the one thing that has pushed me forward. The Red Sox dont have to submit their division series roster until 10 a.m. Thursday. They have decisions to make regarding the backup catcher (strong-armed Christian Vazquez appears to have an inside track on veterans Ryan Hanigan and Bryan Holaday because of the importance of controlling the Indians running game) and the final spots in the bullpen. Left-hander Robby Scott has been sent to the Red Soxs training facility in Fort Myers, Florida, perhaps opening a spot for lefty Fernando Abad.
